Well, what about this unique opportunity?! View the progress of excavating an 18th century ocean sailing ship discovered 25 feet below street level at the World Trade Center site! A 1797 map shows the area used to be Lindsey’s Wharf and Lake’s Wharf on the Hudson River. The ship was used as landfill to extend the land—a process that is still used today.
The archaeologists are racing time, trying to record as much as possible before the rear lowermost deck double layered planks deteriorate from exposure to the air after being buried for 200 years. The ship is estimated to have been 70 to 100 feet long. Also found was a 100-pound anchor, non-lace up shoes, and an odd huge metal collar built into the hull (speculated to be an oven or steam apparatus).
The last large-scale archaeological find along the Manhattan waterfront was in 1982 when an 18th century cargo ship was discovered at 175 Water Street.
Let American City Express Limo make it a special event for you. Excellent Newark Airport car service, taking in the Manhattan sights—including Water Street and this excavation, then dinner, the skyline, and…..

A little history about the Declaration of Independence: The thirteen colonies united in 1774 to become a legislative body known as the Continental Congress. They included the providences of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York/Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, New Hampshire/Vermont, Massachusetts/Maine, Delaware, Virginia/Kentucky/West Virginia, North Carolina/Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia.
Four delegates, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Robert Livingston, wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence based on the writings of Thomas Paine. There are three major sections: the preamble (core fundamental principles are listed), a list of complaints and grievances against King George III of England, and a conclusion (declares formal independence and a pledge of delegates to support the declaration). The official copy to receive handwritten signatures was first signed on August 2, 1776 when most of the delegates signed. As new delegates joined the Congress, they were allowed to sign. There are a total of 56 signatures. The document was recognized by England at the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783—which was also the formal end to the American Revolutionary War between the Thirteen Colonies and the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Happy 234th Independence Day!
