Well, what about this unique opportunity?! View the progress of excavating an 18th century ocean sailing ship discovered 25 feet below street level at the World Trade Center site! A 1797 map shows the area used to be Lindsey’s Wharf and Lake’s Wharf on the Hudson River. The ship was used as landfill to extend the land—a process that is still used today.
The archaeologists are racing time, trying to record as much as possible before the rear lowermost deck double layered planks deteriorate from exposure to the air after being buried for 200 years. The ship is estimated to have been 70 to 100 feet long. Also found was a 100-pound anchor, non-lace up shoes, and an odd huge metal collar built into the hull (speculated to be an oven or steam apparatus).
The last large-scale archaeological find along the Manhattan waterfront was in 1982 when an 18th century cargo ship was discovered at 175 Water Street.
