And, while you are celebrating the unofficial end of summer, don’t forget how it all began.

On September 5, 1882, a New York City group of 10,000 celebrated a “workingman’s holiday” despite the threat of mass layoffs by their employers.  With the idea spreading throughout half of the states over the next few years, Congress finally passed legislation in 1894 designating the first Monday in September a legal holiday:  Labor Day.

With American City Express Limo, your Newark airport limousine and car service specialists, Labor Day will most certainly be a memorable holiday weekend.

Locals are aware, but if you are flying in to Newark Liberty Airport (EWR), this may influence your decision to use a Newark airport limo company…

The trains have a growing trend causing much dissatisfaction for those persons attempting to travel in the Northeastern U.S.  New York and New Jersey rely heavily on the rails.  (Remember that Newark is the second city in the United States–NYC is the first–with the highest proportion of households without automobiles.)

According to the Star-Ledger, over the last two months, rail riders have experienced delays due to overheated locomotives, suicidal pedestrians, signal malfunctions, disabled trains, overhead wire problems, track maintenance and a falling 70-foot tree.  Now there is another cause:  low voltage.  Many are exploring other alternative transportation, one of which might be a Newark airport limo.

An outage, occurring Tuesday due to low voltage, is being investigated.  Tens of thousands of rail riders on the affected NJ Transit and Amtrak trains experienced delays of up to two hours during rush hour on the busiest passenger rail corridor in North America.  The Long Island Rail Road experienced delays as well due to a fire at a switching station.  Fortunately, the problem did not result in a total rail shutdown as it did in 2006.  With the late trains and the 25 percent rate increase, rail riders are frustrated.

As you arrive into the New Jersey-New York area, avoid any frustration yourself by hiring Newark airport limo, American City Express Limo.  Reliable, professional and available 24-hours, seven days a week, customer service is their specialty.

A little history about the Declaration of Independence: The thirteen colonies united in 1774 to become a legislative body known as the Continental Congress.  They included the providences of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York/Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, New Hampshire/Vermont, Massachusetts/Maine, Delaware, Virginia/Kentucky/West Virginia, North Carolina/Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Four delegates, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Robert Livingston, wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence based on the writings of Thomas Paine.  There are three major sections:  the preamble (core fundamental principles are listed), a list of complaints and grievances against King George III of England, and a conclusion (declares formal independence and a pledge of delegates to support the declaration).  The official copy to receive handwritten signatures was first signed on August 2, 1776 when most of the delegates signed.  As new delegates joined the Congress, they were allowed to sign.  There are a total of 56 signatures.  The document was recognized by England at the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783—which was also the formal end to the American Revolutionary War between the Thirteen Colonies and the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Happy 234th Independence Day!

In today’s Sunday paper Parade magazine, one of the “Best Hot Dogs in America” was the Italian Hot Dog in Northern New Jersey.  Here in the New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia area, we knew that.

The Parade states, “In New Jersey, the dogs are known as rippers because their skin erupts while they fry.  In wiener joints around Newark, a half-round of sturdy bakery bread is squeezed open to become a pocket that resembles a pita on steroids, then stuffed with a pair of deep-fried dogs, a heap of sautéed onions and peppers, and a handful of crisp-fried potato chunks:  Behold, the Italian hot dog!”

And speaking of travels, even if you are not traveling via this Newark Airport Car Service specialist, safe travels over this Memorial Day weekend as you celebrate those who have fallen in service of our nation.

Memorial Day Trivia:

  • Officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day.  Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day by Congress in 1968.
  • While many honored the fallen, the first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873.  Other states soon followed.
  • Moina Belle Michael, a University of Georgia professor, established the poppy as a universal symbol of tribute and support for veterans. She wrote the poem below, began wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day, and sold poppies to benefit servicemen in need. American City Express Limo helps with your transportation needs as you pay tribute over Memorial Day weekend.
We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies.
